What Does an NDIS Physiotherapist Do?
A practical guide for NDIS participants, families, support coordinators and plan managers.
An NDIS physiotherapist helps participants improve or maintain movement, physical function and participation in everyday life. For an NDIS participant, physiotherapy may focus on mobility, transfers, balance, strength, endurance, pain affecting function and greater independence at home or in the community.
The most useful programs connect treatment to goals that are meaningful to the participant, such as walking more safely at home, improving confidence on stairs, transferring with less assistance or building endurance for community activities.
What Can an NDIS Physiotherapist Help With?
The exact focus depends on the participant’s disability, current function, environment and goals. Physiotherapy may support:
- Walking, gait and mobility
- Balance and falls-risk reduction
- Transfers, including getting in and out of a chair or bed
- Strength, endurance and physical conditioning
- Pain management where pain affects function
- Individual home exercise programs
- Education for participants, families and support workers
- Functional progress reviews and recommendations
A physiotherapist should assess what is safe and appropriate for the individual rather than applying the same program to every participant.
What Happens During an Initial NDIS Physiotherapy Assessment?
The first appointment usually includes a discussion about the participant’s priorities, current challenges, health and disability history, daily routine and existing supports. The physiotherapist may assess mobility, balance, strength, transfers, walking, joint movement, endurance and the way activities are managed in the usual environment.
For mobile appointments, the assessment can take place at home or in an appropriate community setting. This provides practical information about the spaces, equipment and activities the participant manages each day.
Following the assessment, the physiotherapist can discuss suitable goals and a treatment plan that is realistic, measurable and connected to the participant’s broader NDIS goals.
Why Choose Mobile NDIS Physiotherapy?
Travelling to a clinic may be difficult for participants experiencing fatigue, mobility limitations, transport barriers or reliance on support for appointments. Mobile physiotherapy reduces this travel burden and allows treatment to occur in a familiar environment.
Home-based sessions can make treatment practical. Transfer practice can use the participant’s own chair or bed, walking exercises can reflect the home layout, and exercise programs can use the space and equipment genuinely available.
CEO Therapy provides mobile NDIS physiotherapy across Western and South West Sydney, with evening, weekend and telehealth appointments available where suitable.
How Does Physiotherapy Work With the Support Team?
NDIS physiotherapy often works best when the participant, family and support team understand the goals and agreed strategies. With consent, a physiotherapist may communicate with support coordinators, plan managers, carers, family members and other treating professionals.
This collaboration can help exercise programs continue between appointments, identify changes in function and keep treatment aligned with the participant’s supports. Progress reports and recommendations can also be prepared when required.
Support coordinators can review our NDIS physiotherapy referral information.
Can NDIS Funding Be Used for Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy may be funded when it relates to the participant’s disability, goals and approved supports. Self-managed and plan-managed participants can generally contact a provider directly, while arrangements for NDIA-managed plans should be confirmed before booking.
Funding circumstances vary, so participants and supports should check the current plan and confirm service arrangements. Our NDIS physiotherapy funding guide explains more.
When Should You Consider a Physiotherapy Referral?
A referral may be worth considering following a decline in mobility, repeated falls or near falls, greater difficulty with transfers, reduced strength or endurance, changes in walking, pain limiting function or reduced participation in daily activities.
